EASY PEASY! Materi Lengkap Argumentative Text

Hai hai semuaa! Apa kabar? Hope you guys are fine. Yuk langsung aja kita bahas bersama. Let’s go!!

1. What is an Argumentative Text?
Argumentative text is a text which contains the writer's opinions on a topic or issues and is followed by evidence, reasons, and examples to strengthen it so that the reader can trust the writer's opinion more. The writer's opinions can be either in favor or against.

2. Purpose of Argumentative Text
The purpose is to communicate the writer's opinion persuasively because it has supported arguments and a variety of evidence.

3. Generic Structure of Argumentative Text
    1) Thesis Statement (Statement of position)
To clearly state the writer's opinion on the topic raised as the theme of the article.
    2) Argument
Includes the writer's opinions and evidence to support writer’s opinion in the Thesis Statement.
    3) Summing up the Position
Contains a restatement or conclusion about the writer's opinion on the topic or issue discussed.

Nah, jadi selain struktur diatas, Argumentative text ini punya 2 perbedaan di tujuan-nya nih. Apa aja tuh?

In Argumentative text, the contents of the conclusion can be divided into 2 based on the type of text because they have differences in purpose, including Analytic Argumentation Text and Hortatory Argumentation Text.

The aim of the Analytic text is to make the reader aware of the topics covered. So it is sufficient to summarize the contents of the basic and supporting arguments. Meanwhile, Hortatory text aims to make the reader compelled to follow the suggestions of the arguments presented by the writer. So, it contains suggestions or recommendations itself.

4. Different Types of Argumentative Text
a) Scientific texts
These texts can cover a wide range of topics. They can be psychological, linguistic, philosophical, theological, etc. The important point of this type of text is that they are based on facts and the information contained in these texts cannot be refuted, as they are justified by demonstrable facts or even statistical data. On the other hand, this does not mean that the main idea of the text cannot be debated, but the data or facts that support it can.

b) Judicial texts
There are several types of judicial texts, but all of them are characterized by setting conditions or restrictions for some actions. These texts arise from the legislative practice of lawyers. In these texts they emphasize several types such as sentences, requests, resources, notices, appeals and decrees, etc.

The structure of this text is based on a thesis or main idea and a body is developed in which different arguments are presented in support of this idea. This text seeks to convince or persuade the other party so that an action is not taken or some allegations are rejected.

c) Test
It is the most personal way of conveying ideas. This type of text is characterized by showing the author's style, but it must also have a logical structure in order to be understood. The purpose of this text is to convince the reader, through argument or reasoning, to accept or share the author's views.

The essay can address any topic, but it must have an introduction, development, and conclusion, as what is important in this case is for the writer to know how to present his argument to convince the reader.

d) Journalistic texts
In journalistic discourse, we find texts that aim to persuade or convince readers to adopt or reject an idea. An example of this type of text can be seen in a reader's letter, where a person clearly presents his or her point of view on a topic.

We can also see it in critical reviews, where the writer is dedicated to criticizing an issue with different arguments. And in editorials and opinion pieces, where the writer clearly states his position on a particular subject or person, making it clear what he feels and thinks about it. Arguments can be facts or data, but can also be based on descriptions and comparisons.

e) Oral discussions and opinion forums
This is the clearest form of argumentative text. It is of the oral type and is basically an act of communication in which different ideas on the same subject are exposed. Debates usually take place on controversial issues where there are several positions. In that case, both parties, who agree or in favor, express their arguments to try to convince others.

Opinion forums, on the other hand, tend to be about much more varied topics. It is a space in which people exchange their opinions or the information they have about a specific topic. Both in the debates and in the opinion forums, the arguments are based on comparisons, experiences, data, among others.

f) Advertising texts
These texts are meant to convey ideas about a topic or product to convince or persuade people to buy a product or accept a way of thinking. The advantage of publicity texts is that they are helped by visual elements to achieve their purpose.

This type of text uses many other resources to convince people. However, this advantage has a disadvantage. In advertising texts, the message must be very concise. This means that you should try to achieve your goal in a short period of time without having to develop your argument too much. Examples Commercials, political advertisements, billboards, posters, among others, are types of advertising texts.

5. Expression/ Language Feature of Argumentative Text
    a. Abstract Noun
Nouns that are abstract (cannot be seen, heard or touched), for example: beauty, bravery, culture, confidence, goodness, hope, etc.
    b. Action Verb
Verbs that describe actions that humans and animals can do, for example: eat, touch, talk, watch, walk, etc.
    c. Temporal Connectives
Vocabulary that connects one event to another in sequence, for example: firstly, secondly, thirdly, etc.
